Ancient Shadow 3: Unquiet Death (Ongoing)

Preface

He moved through the deep darkness of the night. He smiled as he blended into the darkness. None would see him; he was the stalker in the dark. He smelt her, the rich blood of his target. The young woman that he had so carefully seduced up to this point. He eluded the guards who were to enforce the curfew and found her. She smiled at him and came to him. He heard the soft beating of her heart and smelt sweet smell of her blood. He put forward his power, and she stare, making no noise. No noise when he revealed his fangs. No noise when he nuzzled against her neck and no noise but a small gasp when he bit down and started to drink

Ch 1

It began with the screams that shattered the quiet morning. Dante had been enjoying his time in the early dawn. Dante was 24 with a lean muscular build, he had black hair and grey eyes. He was already armored when the screaming started, and he was able to grab his weapons. He found his men up and preparing, he ordered them to hurry up and they moved out leaving the manor they were occupying and going into the street of the city. The city was a small walled city. Dante and is men moved down the narrow streets and he followed the movement of people congregating around a side street. Dante pushed past some people when and came to the scene of the tragedy. The city guard had ringed the scene and Dante could see past them an officer looking at the body of a young woman. Dante and his men approached the ring. “No, one is allowed to approach by order of captain Lucian.” The guard said. “I am Dante, I am a lieutenant of the Black Templar legion” Dante said, “We are here on order to investigate the murders that have been going on”. The guard looked surprised and leaned over and spoke to another guard. The other guard went to the captain he was tall looked to be in his 30’s his hair was white, and he had piercing brown eyes. The guard came to attention and reported to the captain. He looked at the crowd in Dante’s direction and spoke to the Guard. The guard snapped to attention and stepped away. The captain signaled to Dante to come, and Dante told his men to remain and stepped though the line.

Dante approached the captain “The told me you were a crusader, and you were here to investigate” the captain said, “I am Captain Lucian and I am the one the Lord placed in charge of this investigation. Dante extended his hand “I am Dante, Lieutenant in the Black Templar Legion, I was ordered here to aid these investigations by my commander. I have no intention of usurping your authority or taking control of the investigation. “Well, I could probably use some help” Lucian said, “Come take a look”. Dante and Lucian approached the body of the young woman. The body had signs of almost surgical violence, but there seemed to be no blood The chest was split open and as Dante moved into in check closer, he noticed that Internal Organs were missing.  He also saw on the womans neck marks of a bite. “It looks like this woman was bitten and there is a complete lack of blood” Dante said, “Was she bitten by a vampire or another blood drinker but then why extract the heart after”. Lucian nodded “I did not think we might be dealing with vampires, but I did wonder about the complete lack of blood. We are preparing to move the body to the guard post for a better examination. Would you like to accompany, and we can discuss thing further Dante. Dante nodded and stood as Lucian signaled his men to take the body.

Ch 2

Later Dante sat with Lucian in his office at the Guard Post. The post was a fortified build in near the edge of the city. The body had been taken to the mortuary and been examined. Lucian had a report on his desk and was reading it. “The body was drained of blood before the heart was removed. This was determined by the lack of blood in and around the wound. The marks on the neck seem to be where the blood was removed from the body. Reports from the scene indicate that the woman was killed on site. That she seemed to go into the alley of her own will and was attacked.” Lucian summarized “You think what we are dealing with is a vampire”. Dante nodded and asked “The attack itself seems to indicate a vampire. Have there been any other attacks?  Lucian nodded and said “In recent weeks we have seen an increase in deaths. The victims are always young females, and they always have a missing heart. Well, the ones we can find”. Dante looked intently at Lucian “What do you mean?” He asked. “We have had several disappearances of young women as well as the deaths” Lucian said. Dante nodded “The deaths were they found in a similar fashion to the young woman today. As in no other signs of violence like the woman just walked into the arms of her killer?” He asked. Lucian nodded “Some were found on the street like the woman today, Others were found in their homes. No signs of forced entry and yet they were found dead”. Dante stared as though deep in thought “I still think we are dealing with a vampire, but there are difficulties such as why kidnap the people and why take the heart as a trophy. Interesting I have somethings to investigate.” Dante took his leave of Lucian and left the guard post with his men, and they moved down the street towards their lodging. As they walked down the street. Dante saw a young man standing by a building. He had silver hair, but Dante could not make out any other features, and he held a staff. Dante did not know why his attention was drawn to this young man. That was until Dante saw a shimmer from him and Dante knew that the young man was using a glamour. Dante decided he was going to investigate this young man. He sent his men on ahead of him and moved to the area his saw the young man.

Ch3

Dante approached the building and saw the young man still standing by the building. As Dante moved to approach him. He saw two younger males approach him. Dante could see they were both elves. The older one had brown hair and green eyes. He also had the lean build of a warrior. The younger boy had black hair and blue eyes he was much thinner with the build of a scout. Both boys seemed to be armed, the older having two blades strapped to his back and he younger with a bow and arrow and a knife. The boy came up and started talking to the young man. Dante could not hear what they said but the trio moved off. Dante watched them go and moved to follow when he noticed others who were watching them. These others were watching the trio and some moved to follow them. Dante stopped and moved off and watched. Dante followed his hand on the hilt of his blade. He saw the trio move into an alley way and the followers moved to close the way behind them. Dante heard one of the men laugh and started telling the others to move into the alley and capture the trio. He also heard him say how they would be valuable. Dante gritted his teeth and his hand tightened on his swords hilt. “Slavers” Dante whispered. Dante watched the slavers move into the alley and he followed drawing his black steel bladeDante came onto a scene. The trio in the center of the alley was surrounded by men dressed in black cloaks wielding blades and a few holding nets. “Just come quiet and we won’t hurt you to bad you are valuable property” one of the men said. “What exactly do you think you are doing here?” Dante asked. He had his blade at his side, but he was ready to move in an instant. The men turned their attention to him. One of the slavers smiled wickedly “Not that it is any of your business, but these elves will make fine catches and will fetch a high price. The fey boy will be worth even more on the markets after we have had our fun with him” The slaver said, “I saw you have been watching them, and they are ours”.  “I am a Crusader Knight in the Black Templars Legion, and I am arresting you for slavery. Come quietly and perhaps you live long enough to be tried” Dante said. The slaver was not smiling any more “Kill him so we can get back to business” The slaver said. A group of the slavers laughed as they approached Dante. Dante moved swinging his sword around into a ready position as the slavers tried to rush him. In a flash of dark steel, two of the slavers fell and Dante moved in his blade wet. The fight was interrupted by a flash and several screams. It was in that confusion that Dante rushed the slavers in a few sweeps of his blade the slavers fell. It was then that Dante noted the scene before him. The two younger boys had their weaponout but what was strangers was the young man's staff was flickering with power and several of the slavers around him had smoking wounds. The last slaver standing was looking scared when the young man stretched out his hand, and the slaver was slammed into the side of a building by a silver arc of lighting. Suddenly the trio was staring at Dante. “I thank you for your timely arrival but who are you?” asked the silver haired young man.

Ch 4

Dante got his first good look at the young man and the boys. “As I said I am Dante, I am glad I arrived in time though looking now you were more than capable of handling these men on your own” he said. The silver haired young man smiled and said “I am Jay, and this is Rowan and Sky. We might have been able to stop them, but we were surprised by themyour arrival gave us time to get our weapons so we could fight”.  Dante got a closer look at Jay, he was slim and had a boyish face though he looked to be 18 or 19. Dante could not make out other features though Jays glamour. Then suddenly the glamour was gone, and Dante could see Jays features. He still had a boyish face, but they were enhanced by an etheric aura. His eyes were slightly slanted, and they seemed to shift colors depending on how you looked into them. Then Dante looked at the boys they both had the eternally youthful features and pointed ears of the elves. The older boy Rowan had deep green eyes and light brown hair. He was lean and had the look of a soldier wielding his two thin blades. The younger boy Sky had bright blue eyes and black hair. He was slim like Jay and had the look of an archer with his bow and knife. Dante nodded and looked around seeing some of the men still moaning and others lying still “I was happy to help but we should take care of some of this scum” he said. Dante saw some guards passing the alley and hailed them. The guards were happy to take care of the men. It seemed none of the men had been killed but a few had serious wounds. One of the guards went for help and he returned with Lucian and more guards. The took custody of the men and Lucian looked at Dante “It would seem I owe you for dealing with this scum” Lucian said. Dante nodded and told Lucian what had occurred before they moved off with the prisoners. Then Dante went back to Jay and the others. “What are you doing out here anyway?” Dante asked. “We are looking for a Slayer named Seth, I received a note that convinced me he was here in the city” Jay said. You don’t mean Seth the Golden Slayer?” Dante asked. Jay looked shocked “Do you know Seth? Do know where he is?” Jay asked. Dante nodded and said “I know him, we worked together on several missions. I have not seen him in a long time. I had not heard that he was in the city”. Jay nodded “I had hoped you might have heard from him and knew where he was. We will just have to keep looking. “If you find him or just need somewhere safe to stay, please come find me. I will find a way to let you know if I hear anything about Seth Dante said. Dante told Jay where they he was he and his men were staying in the city and Jay told him about the inn where they were staying before Jay and the boys disappeared into the city again. Dante then returned to the manor where his men were waiting to hear what Dante intended to do next.

Ch 5

When Dante returned to the manor he began to organize his men. He had about 24 men under his command. He began by detailing men in pairs to go on patrols through the city. They were to be on the lookout for anything suspicious, and he sent the first groups off. He also detailed the guards for the manor. Dante then took one of his men named Cody and they went on a patrol themselves. It was becoming twilight at that time as they walked the streets watching the stretching shadows. It was as they were passing a Tavern that they heard shouts, and someone was thrown out. The person hit the ground and Dante saw it was a young man he was dressed in brown robes; he was slim with dark brown hair and as he looked at him. Dante could see he had startling green eyes. The young man reaches out imploringly “Help me, my sister is still in inside” he said. Dante told Cody to help the young man up and marched towards the tavern. The tavern was full and boisterous as Dante moved inside, and he immediately saw the young woman. The woman was very alike to her brother in a brown robe, and she was being harassed by several men. They seemed intent on the woman and did not see Dante approach them. “You should leave the lady alone” Dante told the men. “Mind your own business if you know what is good for you, she is enjoying our company.” said one of the men. Dante could see in their eyes and the way they spoke that they were drunk, and the young woman had a desperate look in her eyes. The woman’s eyes widened as Cody came into the tavern the young man and approached Dante. “I am warning you  leave the lady alone and I will buy you a drink” Dante said. The drunk man snarled “I told you to go away” he said and moved to punch Dante. Dante moved out of the way of his drunken punch and kicked out at the man tripping him. Dante then rolled the fallen man over and gave hit him hard enough to lose consciousness. The other drunks moved away from Dante as he escorted the young woman to her brother. They hugged and thanked Dante for his help. Dante took the thanks and asked them if they had somewhere safe to say since the drunks would gain their courage again soon. No, we were inquiring about rooms here or somewhere nearby when those drunks accosted us” the young man said, “My name is Willow, and my sister is Iris”. “I am Dante and this is Cody. If you come with us, we have a safe place where you can stay. It not safe to be wandering around in the dark in this city.” Dante said. The escorted Willow and Iris to the manor, and Dante found an unused room where the two could stay for the night. Then Dante went to inspect his men and insure everything was still running smoothly. The Dante retired to his chamber and began a report on what was occurring in the city for his superiors.

Interlude 1

He moved though the darkness listening to the beating of the people's hearts and the pumping of sweet blood through their veins. They had not given him a new target yet, so he was simply wandering around the city, this night. This was his city, and the people were his, to prey upon. Then a new scent came to him. This was something new; it was sweet and intoxicating, and he had to fight the desire to find the source of this new scent. He was going to be expected by them soon and as much as he desired to find the source, he would have to be patient and bid his time. He moved past the tavern where he had caught the scent and moved was swallowed by the darkness.

Ch 6

It was in the light of the morning Dante and a group of his men arrived at ta cemetery. “Spread out, we are looking for places that look recently disturbed. Places where the vampire could be hiding during the day.” Dante said. Dante and his men began to spread out among the crypts and graves. As Dante moved down the rows of graves, he did not see any sign of disturbance in the graves or tombs situated around the grave. This was an initial part of his investigation, looking to find out where the vampire might be hidden within the city. Dante was sure he was in the city and not in the countryside. The vampire would not stray far from his hunting grounds. So here they were but even as he returned to the entrance and his men began to reappear with nothing to show for their investigation. They had been searching since dawn. With no sightings or deaths in the night Dante had decided to try and find the vampires hideout. The cemetery seemed to be a good place to start but with no luck. Dante was not sure where to check next. The next best place would be in a building that was largely unoccupied. Dante knew he would have to ask Lucian if he wanted to figure out where such a building might be. Dante sent some of his men out on patrol and went with an escort of two men to find Lucian. They went to the guard outpost where he had first spoken to Lucian and approached the guard. “Is Lucian here” Dante asked. “No sir, the captain is out on patrol,” the guard said. “Perhaps you can help me, I am looking for buildings that are old and abandoned,” Dante asked. The guard brought Dante to a map and pointed out were building that he knew fit Dante’s description. Dante nodded and left the outpost with the locations that he wanted. He went with his escort, and they went and began to scout out the building. Many of the buildings, despite being old and unoccupied, were clearly being taken care of. As they moved down the list, Dante did find three buildings that fit his criteria but by then the sun was beginning to set. Dante knew it would be better to investigate the inside of the buildings during the day and with more of his men. Dante chose to return to the Manor as the sun began to set and was told by one of his men on guard that Willow and Iris had left the Manor at midday and had found new accommodations. Dante acknowledged this and returned to his room and began setting out his plans for the next day.

Interlude 2

His hunger was building again, and they had given him a new target. In the growing twilight he approached the windows of his target. She sat in her home before a warm fire. He tapped on the window and the woman looked at him and began to fall under his spell. She rose and let him into her home, and he began to work his power on her binding her to his will. Then he fed off her but not enough to kill her. It was not time for that, but he was so hungry. As he left her home and went out into the greater darkness. He smelt it again that sweet and intoxicating smell, and he chose to follow this time. He followed past a great manor and on to a small inn. He levitated and saw through a window a young man and woman sleeping in a room. That sweet smell was coming off one or both of them. He would mark them as his but not tonight. The dark was lightning, and he needed to return to his den.

Ch 7

Dante set out with a squad in the growing light of Dawn. Dante took his men, and they began searching the abandon buildings. It was past midday before they came to the last building and entered it. As he entered Dante noticed evident of a disturbance. Dante drew his sword and signaled for his men to fan out and search. They found evidence that the building was being used for some sort of gathering. Dante found signs and papers that hinted at the gatherings, but none of those who might have gathered there or the goal of those who gathered there. Then Dante heard shouts and the sounds of a struggle. Dante rushed forward and saw several of his men converging on the struggle. Dante saw them two robed men and the pale form of the vampire. Some of his men had come across them and a struggle had ensued. Dante saw in flash one of his men was down unconscious and another was nursing a wound. Dante and the other reinforcements came in and the vampire and those with him fell back. “Surrender” Dante said holding up his blade. “You have not chance”. Dante felt his men behind him weapons ready. The Vampire smiled wickedly and moved quickly. The vampire did not move to attack Dante or his men. The Vampire grabbed the robed men and in a burst of supernatural speed the Vampire moved through a nearby window. The window shattered and in a unfurling of black wings the vampire took flight taking the robed men with him. Dante cursed as he ran to the window and watched the vampire fly away. Dante then went to look to the condition of his men who had been downed. Dante saw that they would both live and make full recoveries.

Dante ordered his men to finish searching the building and that maybe they could find some other clues as to what was happening in the building. They found very little evidence of the Identities of the robed men or that the building served as the den of the Vampire. Dante knew that he needed to inform Lucian of what they had witnessed inside the building. Dante order most of his men to return to the manor and set out to find Lucian.

Ch 8

Dante found Lucian at his office in the guard house. Dante told him about their encounter with the vampire and where it took place. “That building is supposed to be abandoned but I know that the building is owned by a local lord Did you find anything that might point to those who were gathering there?” Lucian asked. “No, we found some evidence of the gathering, some papers and signs, but we did not find anything that could identify the people involved. The men we discovered in the building were carried off by the vampire before they could be identified.” Dante said. Lucian stood and looked out a window at the growing shadows of the afternoon. He turned and opened his mouth to speak when suddenly there was a bang on the door. Lucian told whoever was at the door to enter.

A young guard enter the room and snapped to attention as he reported that a young man had entered the guard house and was telling a story about his sister being abducted by a vampire. Lucian ordered him to be brought in, and Dante was surprised when he saw Willow being brought into the office. The guards helped him get into a seat and Lucian told him to tell his story Willowed laid out a story of how he and sister had been out in the city. They were returning to the inn where they were staying when a pale man with bat wings came out of the air. The monster had grabbed out as he landed, and Iris had pushed Willow over and had been grabbed. He had been forced to watch as the vampire flew away as others had come out of nearby buildings to see what was occurring Willow looked at Lucian after his story and then at Dante. They knew that they could not leave Willow alone, and Dante said he would take him back to the manor where he should be safe. Lucian offered them an escort back to the Manor. “We will finish talking about the meeting spot later. I will place some guards to watch the building. We will also increase patrols to see if we can find signs of Iris.” Lucian said. Dante and Willow nodded. “All of our stuff is still at the Inn,” Willow said. “I will send some of my men to retrieve them when we get you settled back into the manor.” Dante said, “We will also get your sister back Willow.” Willow nodded and Dante helped him up, and they moved out of the building with their escort.

They moved through the city street heading back to the manor. They did not speak much as they moved though the twilight. They did not see the shadow moving across the rooftops watching them as they moved down the cramped city street.

Interlude 3

His anger wormed through his body. He had been awoken early and been hunted and forced to flee. Even the thing that had been good, the finding of those whose blood was so sweet was not completely good. He had taken the female and now held her in his lair, but he still desired the male. To have both and turn them into vassals would be wonderful. He had stalked the male and knew that he was with the hunters and so he was angry.

He came to the home of the young woman that he had been ordered to seduce for those men. He was ordered to take her. She had been found worth studying and now they wanted her. In his anger and agitation, he was less than subtle. He forced his way into her room, and she let out a cry before he put her to sleep, and it happened. Guards patrolling nearby had heard her cry and come. He smiled because he could let out his anger. Two guards stormed into the room, and he fell upon them. The battle was short but vicious; the first guard fell before he even knew what was going on. His throat ripped out. The other he played with like a cat letting the terror grow. The young guard lashed out with his weapon, but it could not harm one such as him. He grabbed the guard and pulled him close before he bit down and began to drink. After he had slaked his thirst and appeared his anger he turned and left with the woman. He would deal with the hunters soon and take the male as his prize. They would both serve him into eternity as he took the power that was promised and arose as an undying king. He smiled at the thought as he flew into the night.

Ch 9

Dante had drifted into a light doze when he was awoken by a banging on his door. It was just dawn when one his men told him captain Lucian had come. Dante quickly dressed and came to the main hall of the manor. Lucian stood there in his armor with two of his men. Dante motioned for Lucian to follow him and lead him to the main study he had been using. “There has been another abduction” Lucian said, “Worse two of my men are dead”. “What?” Dante asked. “Two of my men did not report in after a patrol and when I sent men find them they discovered them dead in a home that had been broken in to” Lucian said “One of them had their blood drained so I can say for a fact it was the Vampire”. Dante nodded and stared at Lucian. “I want to know more about vampires. Like why the vampire was out in the daylight. They should not be able to do that. It should kill them, shouldn’t it?” Lucian asked. “No, daylight will kill most lower caste vampires, but higher caste vampires will only be weakened by daylight” Dante said “We are likely dealing with a high caste vampire. Something I don’t understand is why the vampire is alone. Most high caste vampires will not stray far from their coven”.

Lucian nodded “That makes sense, but what is the vampire up to?” He asked. “Likely the two abductions and these new deaths are an indicator that we have disrupted whatever the original plan was. We need to find out what that plan was and capture or kill that vampire Dante said. “I will be doubling the men I send on patrol, and I am going to send investigators to find any other spots where the vampire might hide” Lucian said. Dante nodded “I will be reinforcing my defense here. I feel that having encountered him he will want to eliminate us as soon as he can,” Dante said. Lucian said and shook Dante hand as he left the manor and prepared to return to his command post.

Ch 10

After Lucian left the manor, Dante began to organize his men to amplify the defenses of the manor. Dante detailed men to begin setting up the warding against the vampire and others for extra guard duty. Dante then sat in the dining hall and began to eat a quick breakfast and considered the potential for a new plan. He knew the vampire would most likely target them for no other reason than they knew of its existence. He also knew if they wanted to discover the fate of those who were abducted; they needed to get the information from the vampire. It would be necessary to capture the vampire if they wanted to get any information out of it and the best way to do it would be an ambush.

It was as in the middle of his breakfast that Willow came down. He looked like he had not slept all night. Willow sat and Dante told him he should get some food. Dante signaled a young soldier and ordered him to bring Willow some food, and they began to talk. “Do you think my sister is alive?” Willow asked. “I don’t know but I think it is likely. We disrupted the vampires plan, and we saw another abduction over the course of the night. I am thinking it likely that one or both are still alive, but I can’t say for how long.” Dante said, “I think it will attack us here at some point and I intend to use the opportunity to try and capture it”. “Why do you think it will attack you and why do you think it will attack here?” Willow asked. “It will attack us here because it will desire to eliminate us. We have shown that we are a threat to it. The vampire will attack here because it is the best way to eliminate us all at once. It still thinks it is greater than us and that we represent only a small threat. That will be a weakness we can exploit. I will leave a hole in our defense that we can use in an ambush. We will have to capture or eliminate it since an ambush will only work once.” Dante said “If you want, I can arrange another safe house for you with Lucian. I know he is organizing the guard to try and find your sister and the other abducted woman.” Willow nodded “I want to stay here, if there is a chance we can capture and interrogate that vampire, I want to be a part of it. I know some magic, so I am not totally defenseless.” Dante nodded and they finished their breakfast while Dante laid out his plan for the ambush of the Vampire.

Ch 11

Dante was moving around the manor with the light of midday filtering through the window. He was checking the preparation for the coming night. He had selected spots for a potential ambush by making sure there were slight holes in the defenses of the manor. He was on ground floor was moving to talk to some of his men and as he passed a window, he saw willow sitting in small grove on the manor grounds. Willow sat before a stunted tree; it had barley grown and was probably never going to but now it seemed to move. Willow seemed to be shaping the tree with his magic. Dante watched in as the stunted tree warped and seemed to reshape itself into 6 foot long staff. Willow took the staff and slamming the end into the dirt, Dante saw a flow of shining liquid entwining itself around the staff. Then the liquid stopped flowing and the liquid hardened and adhered to the staff.

When it was done, Willow began to examine the staff. Dante went out to the grounds “That was impressive” Dante said, “is that the magic you were talking about?”. Willow looked around and nodded “Yes, it is a form of creation. I was able to reshape the stunted tree and bound the staff with silver.” Willow said, “I hope it will prove useful against the vampire.” Dante looked at the staff and could see the gleaming silver entwined around the staff. “Can I examine your staff?” Dante asked. Willow nodded and gave the staff to Dante. He examined the staff closer it had a warm texture and pulsed with a living energy. The silver was bound into the structure and was entwined with the staff.  The silver ended in caps at both ends of the staff. Dante handed the staff back to Willow. “It is a powerful staff” Dante said, “It should be helpful if you have the skill to use it”. Willow smiled and moved through a swift series of movements with the staff. He ended in a combat stance and Dante saw that the silver caps had become spearpoints. Dante smiled and nodded at Willow, and then both proceeded to go back inside and prepare for the coming confrontation.

Interlude 4

He was going to get his prize tonight. He had been watching the house where the boy was, and he was still thereHe felt the powerful wards that were supposed to keep him out, and he began to probe the defenses. He found places that had large holes in the defenses, but his instincts warned against these but soon he found a place with a smaller hole in the defense. A place that seemed to be an overlook in the defense. So, he entered through this small hole and slipped into the manor. He desired to slaughter everyone that the manor, but he wanted to get his hands on his prize first. He followed the sweet scent of his prey though the halls. He encountered no guards, but he did not care. He was almost at his prey. He entered a large room in the manor. The room seemed to be a suite and there were multiple doors leading to other chambers. He stepped into the room he could smell his prey behind one of the doors, but his instincts started screaming. He smelt others under the stronger scent of his prey. He started to hiss when the doors opened. He watched them come out of the rooms and surround him.

He smiled as he looked around a the fools around him. The only one who he sensed posed any threat was the one standing near his prey. He had the aura of command. He moved to lash out at some of those around him. The commander was suddenly there with a blade of dark metal. He felt the blade pulse with familiar energy. He snarled and deftly moved away from the commander and his blade. He lashed out at other but any attempt at a killing strike was met by the commander. He moved through the battle, but he always found the commander on his heels and as he moved to avoid his blade, he found himself getting slower. Several times he thought he would evade and still felt the bite as the blade found his cold flesh. He could not understand, and he was becoming more frustrated. He should be surrounded by corpses drained of blood but no he was almost at the point where he would be fighting for his life. He snarled again and saw the path to his prey open. He launched himself in that direction. He would gather his prize and return when he had the power to slaughter these fools. He thought he would be able to take his prey but then the commander was in front of him again but this time he could not move away in time, and he felt the dark blade sink into his abdomen. He screamed and lashed out at the commander. The commander was launching off his feet and hit a wall, and he felt the blade tear free. In pain he moved to kill the commander and take his prey. Then he felt a new sting as his prey began to lash out with a staff he carried. He screamed again as a barb of silver sunk into his flesh. The pain was too much; he fled lashing out at anyone who got in his way. He moved towards a large hole in the defense and threw himself out of the manor. He fled down the dark streets and then he felt others. He moved and attacked them in pain and fury. There were three and he quickly killed on and drained his blood. He smashed another against a wall shattering his spine. He moved to kill and drain the third when several arrows sped out of the darkness. He avoided the shafts and was moving to find where the arrows came from when he was taken and thrown against a wall by a bolt of silver lightning

He was injured and he heard a pursuit coming from the direction of manor, and this new threat was too much. He spread his wings and flew into the darkness. He would show them that this entire city would pay for what had happened to him. Those fools would deliver the promised power. One of their high priests had come to the city and he would make the priest deliver the powers and then he would KILL THEM ALL.
