The following a partial transcript of an interview with a dangerous gang member. The prisoner has been wearing a mask since his arrest and claims that he must continue to wear the mask. You ask why I wear this mask. This mask that obscures and confuses. What a silly question why any of us wear mask. We do it to hide a part of ourselves to protect ourselves from the thorns of a cruel and uncaring world. The gods are fickle and the crowd even more so. So, we wear the mask in the hopes that we can remain safe among our fellow mortals.
Oh, you ask why I personally wear the mask well that is a bit more complicated isn’t it. I wear the mask for protection to hide from my own personal beast
My personal beast? Well, it is the thing that hunts in the dark places and is always hungry. The thing that delights in causing pain and suffering simply for the fun of the suffering caused. It is in all truth a demon. I wear the mask to hide and protect from the hunting eyes of the beast.
Why do I need to protect myself from the beast? I don’t you see I wear the mask to protect you and others. The mask hides and protect by keeping you unaware of the beast for when you are aware that's when he comes. When he comes only pain, suffering, and death follow. You do not want the beast to become aware of you.
When did the beast first come? I first felt the beast stir so long ago. I was a child an in a tantrum when the beast first came. I only knew the beast came because of the way others reacted to me. The beast came sporadically in those early years coming at times of heightened emotions and bringing violence. I found the mask help since it allowed me to hide my face, and the beast would not come. I started to wear the mask all the time in my teenage years when the beast became more powerful more ravenous. It was around this time I committed my first crimes. Most often these crimes would be assaults when some low life would take my mask from me and the beast would come. When the gang found me, it was like a weight was lifted form me. You ask why? They gave me an outlet to appease the beast they wanted someone removed i would come remove my mask and let the beast play.
